History

In 1982, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) made $5 million available for rural technical assistance, and the foundation of the current Local Technical Assistance Program was created.

The Tribal Technical Assistance Program (TTAP) was established in 1991 to address the transportation needs of Native American tribes. Over the next 26 years the program would grow to a network of 58 LTAP/TTAP Centers with an annual program budget $11.1 million.

Today, state departments of transportation, the U.S. DOT's Office of Federal Lands Highway, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and host universities are sponsoring partners in the LTAP/TTAP project.
