Re: Nomination of Bill Woods for University Awards for Excellence

To: Review Committee

From: Linda Collier, Assistant Director, NC LTAP

It is with pleasure that I nominate William E. Woods (Bill) for the University Awards for Excellence. Bill has worked with ITRE and the North Carolina Local Technical Assistance Program for three years. Bill came to ITRE and NC LTAP with no work experience in an academic environment. From the very beginning, it became apparent that Bill cared about the program and the people that it touches. He claimed the LTAP program as his own-working diligently to learn the programs, sitting through each of the training courses and interacting with the people. Bill's easy -going personality suits our clientele perfectly - building trust and confidence that we can provide the training and information that they need quickly, efficiently, and at a cost effective price.

Bill is currently the Program Coordinator for North Carolina LTAP program. NC LTAP is one of 58 LTAP programs nationwide and is funded by the Federal Highway Association.

Bill is responsible for the day to day activities of the NC LTAP program and the 85 scheduled training sessions that were held in 2009. He handles registrations, interacts with instructors and participants, coordinates the training locations, and manages and distributes training materials. Bill is also responsible for the ITRE library and its materials and the LTAP video library.

Bill responds in a timely manner to each request for service- whether that is from inside the ITRE organization, from the clients in North Carolina cities and towns or from the national LTAP organization. Bill travels across the state to facilitate training sessions that are scheduled near the attendees to save them time and money. As the economy weakened, LTAP planned more and more training out of Raleigh, in order to accommodate our clients travel restrictions. Bill gives up time with his family to provide this service to the program and NC municipalities.

Bill also travels to the LTAP regional meetings and national meetings in order to learn what other LTAP organizations are doing for their state program and how we can adopt those ideas for North Carolina.

Bill attends multiple conferences each year with the LTAP trade show boot. The purpose of the conferences is to spread information about the program and the services that LTAP can provide. Bill is also an active participant in the planning and facilitating of the multiple conferences that are planned by ITRE each year.

Bill and his wife, Cynthia, moved to the Raleigh area a few years ago. They made this move so that they could take care of Cynthia's grandmother, who is ill. This has turned into a full time job for them that they have accepted with great kindness. They both have large families in the area who depend on them for support. Bill is always quick to offer help to anyone who needs it.

Bill participates in the community service projects organized by ITRE. He has helped build a Habitat for Humanity house, and sorted and organized food at the NC Food Bank. Bill is always willing to participate in office social events. He and Cynthia have been bowling with the ITRE staff and attended a Durham Bull's baseball game.

Bill relaxes by going to the NC State campus gym, where he is taking care of his health and networking with other NC State employees.
