Greening Our Transportation Infrastructure
Cameron Ishaq recently had the opportunity to represent FHWA and LTAP/TTAP at the 2010 Resource Conservation Challenge breakout session Greening Our Transportation Infrastructure. During the presentation the audience learned about the function of the LTAP/TTAP program - specifically what Centers do in terms of training, technical assistance, technology transfer, etc. with an emphasis on safety. They also were informed that the Centers are a key piece of the local agency network and would be poised to advocate green transportation to its customers. He did caution that the LTAP/TTAP program is at the very beginning of its "green journey" and are doing the following:
- Identifying the LTAP/TTAP program's current state of green preparedness
- Better understand the customer's green outlook
- Prepare Centers for green
- Engage the LTAP/TTAP community to push green to locals
- Define the program's responsibility to advocate green
The FHWA presentation, overall, was met with enthusiasm and interest. Attendees asked interesting questions both during and after the session, and Cameron made some beneficial connections within the green community specifically related to locals.
In addition to the FHWA presentation there were three other presenters during this session: Paul Krekeler from NY State DOT who spoke on the GreenLITES Project Design Certification Program, Jeff Dhont from EPA Region 9 who spoke on CSTIC Collaborations, and Timonie Hood also from EPA Region 9 who spoke on sustainable transit. Cameron was able to talk briefly with the other presenters after the session ended and will task the Clearinghouse to follow up with them to get their green resources into the LTAP/TTAP Resource Database.
